El Pinacate Biosphere Reserve

CAMP IN THE RESERVE

Camping in the reserve is an experience that nature lovers should not miss. The Pinacate Biosphere Reserve is a protected area located in the state of Sonora, Mexico. This reserve is considered one of the most important areas for biodiversity in North America, and it has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Camping in the reserve is an excellent way to immerse yourself in nature, breathe fresh air, and appreciate the beauty of the desert.

To camp in the reserve, it is necessary to register in advance and make the corresponding payment of rights at the Schuk Toak Visitor Center. The reservation process is straightforward, and it is essential to complete it to ensure availability and a smooth camping experience.

Campsite reservations are not made, and there is no exclusivity. Therefore, it is essential to plan and reserve ahead of time to ensure a camping spot. You can only camp in the places designated for it, which are The Owl and Red Cone.

The Owl camping site is ideal for those who want to be close to El Elegante crater, one of the most beautiful and popular attractions in the reserve. It is located 33 km north of the information center along a sandy dirt road. The site has a capacity for 40 people and/or 10 vehicles, and it is recommended to arrive early to secure a spot. The Owl lacks services and facilities, it only has a few tables and benches for picnics, so it is essential to bring all necessary camping gear and supplies. It is also essential to note that you can only heat or prepare your food on the fire in barbecues or portable stoves inside the camping sites. It is prohibited to use rocks as stakes to anchor your tent, tent or tarp to the ground. Also, it is strictly prohibited to slip or slide for recreational purposes downhill from hills covered in volcanic ash, including any other activity that is not permitted.

The Red Cone camping site is located 26 km northwest of the information center and is reached by a stony and rugged dirt road. We recommend you enter with tall vehicles, although four-wheel drive is not necessary. The site has a capacity for 20 people and/or 5 vehicles, and it is also recommended to arrive early to secure a spot. The Red Cone is the closest point to the Santa Clara volcano (Pico Pinacate), which is also an essential attraction in the reserve. The site lacks services and facilities, it only has a few tables and benches, so it is crucial to bring all necessary camping gear and supplies. As in The Owl, you can only heat or prepare your food on the fire in barbecues or portable stoves inside the camping sites. It is also prohibited to use rocks as stakes to anchor your tent, tent or tarp to the ground. And, it is strictly prohibited to slip or slide for recreational purposes downhill from hills covered in volcanic ash, including any other activity that is not permitted.

In conclusion, camping in the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve is an experience that should not be missed. However, it is essential to plan ahead and make the necessary reservations to ensure availability and a smooth camping experience. The Owl and Red Cone are the two designated camping sites, and each one has its particularities, so it is essential to choose the one that best suits your needs. Remember to respect the rules and regulations of the reserve, as they aim to protect the environment and ensure a sustainable future.
